Purple Down Rest Stop Woomera to Roxby Down Rd South Australia

A sound quiet sleep in heaven last night, no noise at all. As Teddy and I went for our walk this morning I realised why I love this Arid Country of ours, to say it is desolate, to me, could be no further from the truth even though there is countless cars and road trains going past during daylight hours, it is full of atmosphere. Where we are is gibber desert, yet, 5kl down the road it turns into red bull dust sand, then trees, this continues kl after kl all the way along. The vastness of nothing, no houses, trees or powerlines simply nothing, yet it harbours the most unique plant life and animals one could ever see, that is apart from the feral cats, goats, rabbits, foxes with a smattering of those pesky yet beautiful dingo’s.

It has been 12 years since we have been this way, I’m sure nothing has changed except in my mind.

It reminds me of Dorethea Mackellar’s poem My Country

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains,
I love her far horizons,
I love her Jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror-
The wide brown land for me!

Although but only one verse, it says it all to me.
